The Weight of a Forged Signature

The conservatory smelled of orchids and old paper, the golden hour light filtering through the glass roof like a blessing I didn't deserve. I stood there, my hand gripping Mila's small shoulder, watching Trevor strut toward the rosewood desk like he owned the world.

He didn't. But he wanted to.

“Elena, darling,” he said, his voice dripping with false sympathy, “I know this is hard. But science is science.”

Then he slammed the report down. The sound echoed like a gunshot, and Mila jumped, burying her face in my coat. I felt her little heart racing against mine.

“Zero percent match, look here!” Trevor pointed a manicured finger at the highlighted line. “Your daughter is not a Kensington. She has no claim to the estate. None.”

My throat tightened. I wanted to scream, to tear that paper to shreds, but I'd learned long ago that screaming only made Trevor smile. So I kept my eyes on Victor, the man who'd raised me, who'd loved me as his own, and I prayed he'd see through the lie.

Victor's eyes narrowed, his fingers drumming the desk. “Explain this, Elena.”

I let go of Mila, kneeling down to her level. Her pink cardigan was rumpled, her cheeks tear-streaked, but she nodded — my brave girl. She knew what to do.

“Check the gold wax seal,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. I lifted the notarized blue folder, the brass clasp cold against my trembling fingers. “My father's seal. He gave it to me before he died.”

Trevor snorted. “Please. A wax seal? That's not evidence.”

But Victor leaned forward, his gaze fixed on the folder. He knew that seal. He'd seen it on every legal document my father ever signed.

“Open the blue court folder,” Victor said, his voice low.

I handed it to him, my hand steady despite the storm inside me. He broke the seal with a satisfying crack, and the room went silent. Only the rustle of paper and the distant hum of traffic outside.

Victor's eyes scanned the document, then widened. He looked up at me, then at Trevor, and I saw something dangerous flash in his gaze.

“This is a federal forensic lab report,” he said slowly. “And it shows a 99.999% DNA match.”

Trevor's smirk froze. “That's impossible. I — I paid for that test myself.”

“You paid for something,” Victor said, holding up a second page. “A wire transfer to a private lab in Nevada. The same lab that issued the report you just presented.”

I watched Trevor's face drain of color, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed hard. Beads of sweat formed on his temple.

“She is my biological blood,” Victor said, his voice thundering. He stood, his chair scraping against the marble floor. “And you — you tried to steal from my granddaughter.”

“Wait, Victor, I can explain —”

But Victor was already nodding toward the door. Two uniformed officers stepped inside, their presence sudden and absolute. Trevor's eyes darted around the room, looking for an escape, but there was none.

“You get nothing, pack up,” Victor said, his voice cold as steel.

As the officers seized Trevor's wrists, he twisted his head toward me, his eyes burning with hatred. “You think you've won, Elena? You don't know the half of it. Ask your father about the second envelope.”

My blood went cold. What second envelope?

But Trevor was already being dragged out, his shouts echoing through the conservatory, and Victor was wrapping his arm around my shoulders, drawing me close. Mila peeked out from behind my leg, her eyes wide.

“It's okay, sweetheart,” I whispered. “Grandpa's here.”

But deep down, I knew Trevor's parting words were a threat I couldn't ignore. And as I looked at Victor, I saw the same question flickering in his eyes.

What had my father hidden?
