Previously: When Sergeant James Harrison knelt beside the dying soldier who had just saved his entire platoon from an ambush, he never expected to look down and see the face of his missing wife.

The Secrets in the Blood

The evacuation helicopter ride was a blur of roaring rotors and desperate medical procedures. James sat in the corner of the chopper, his mind spinning into a dark abyss of confusion and disbelief. Clara was alive. She had joined the army under a false name, hiding her identity from everyone, including him. Why would she flee their happy life only to put herself in the line of fire?

At the base hospital, Clara was rushed into emergency surgery. James paced the sterile corridors for six agonizing hours, clutching his head in his hands. When the surgeon finally emerged to announce she was stable but in a medically induced coma, James felt a momentary wave of relief. James took the locket with trembling fingers. He clicked it open, expecting to see a photo of us from our wedding day. Instead, his breath caught. Inside was a photograph of a beautiful baby boy, staring back at him with Clara's bright blue eyes. Engraved beneath the photo was a date—exactly nine months after Clara had disappeared.

Before he could process the shocking revelation, the heavy wooden door to the hospital room burst open. Two stern-faced Military Police officers marched inside, their hands resting on their holsters.

"Sergeant James Harrison," the lead officer barked. "You are under arrest for treason and the unauthorized distribution of classified military intelligence."

James stared at them, completely stunned, as the cold steel of handcuffs clamped around his wrists. He looked back at his sleeping wife, suddenly realizing that her disappearance was part of a deadly game he was only just beginning to understand.
