Previously: When Sergeant Michael Vance's squad was ambushed, a brave female soldier took the blast for him. But as she lay dying, a worn silver locket revealed a shocking truth.

A Ghost from the Past

The world around Michael seemed to fade into absolute silence, the distant crackle of gunfire and the roar of the burning tank vanishing. He stared at the silver half-heart in his hand, then at the matching piece resting against Rachel’s blood-stained uniform. Twelve years ago, his little sister Lily had been torn from his arms by social services after their parents died. Before they were separated, he had broken a cheap silver heart locket in half, giving her one piece and keeping the other, promising he would find her. He had spent his entire adult life searching for her, enlisting in the Army hoping to use their databases, but Lily had vanished. Now, she was lying on his stretcher, bleeding to death under an assumed name.

"Lily?" Michael choked out, his voice barely a whisper. "Lily, it's me. Mikey. I found you."

Her eyelids fluttered, but her eyes remained dull, glassy, and unfocused. She was slipping away fast. Luke looked up, his face pale beneath the grime.

"Michael, we have to move her now! She's losing too much blood, and her pressure is bottoming out!" Luke shouted.
"She's my sister, Luke! She's my little sister!" Michael screamed, grabbing the medic's arm. "We have to save her!"

Luke stared at him in disbelief, but the urgency of the situation quickly snapped him back. He checked his field kit, his expression growing grimmer by the second.

"She's O-negative, Michael. I don't have any more O-neg bags left in my kit. The evac chopper is delayed because of the sandstorm. If we don't get blood into her right now, she won't survive the next ten minutes."
"I'm O-negative!" Michael insisted, stripping off his tactical gear. "Do a direct line transfusion. Take it straight from me!"

Luke shook his head frantically. Direct field transfusions were incredibly risky, especially in a dusty, contaminated environment. But before he could refuse, the tactical radio on Michael's shoulder crackled to life with a terrifying warning.
