The voice of their platoon leader burst through the static, urgent and laced with panic.
"Vance! Hostile forces are closing in on your position from the east! You have less than two minutes to abandon the area and retreat to the secondary extraction point!"
Michael looked at the approaching dust cloud in the distance, then down at Lily's pale face. He knew that if they moved her now without stabilizing her, she would die. If they stayed to perform the transfusion, they would be completely exposed to the incoming militia. There was no choice.

"We're staying!" Michael roared into the radio. "Luke, hook us up. Now!"
Seeing the fierce determination in Michael's eyes, Luke stopped arguing. He quickly prepped the needles, inserting one into Michael's arm and the other into Lily's. As the warm, life-giving blood began to flow through the plastic tubing, Michael grabbed his rifle with his free hand, resting it on the edge of the stretcher. For ten agonizing minutes, Michael shielded his sister's body with his own, firing back at the advancing enemy scouts while the blood drained from his own veins, making him dizzy and weak.
Just as his vision began to blur from blood loss and exhaustion, the thunderous roar of a Blackhawk helicopter filled the air. Air support had arrived, clearing the enemy and landing directly in the ruins to evacuate them. Both siblings were rushed to the military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
Three days later, Michael woke up in a sterile hospital bed. He looked to his left and saw Lily, awake, her color returned, staring at him with tears in her eyes. She held up her hand, showing the silver half-heart locket. They were finally together, safe and whole. Michael realized that sometimes, the universe works in mysterious ways, guiding us through the darkest storms to the people we love the most.
