The search did not go as easily as Lily had hoped. Her adoptive father, Richard, used all of his corporate connections and private investigators to track down the elderly shoemaker. A few days later, the devastating truth was revealed. Arthur’s beloved workshop had been forcibly bought out by a ruthless local developer named Harold Vance. Left with no income and mounting medical bills for Martha, Arthur had been forced into bankruptcy and evicted onto the streets.

Horrified by the news, Lily immediately drove back to her old hometown. The rain was pouring heavily as she navigated the familiar, gray streets. She searched shelters and soup kitchens, but found nothing. Finally, near a dilapidated bus stop on the edge of the commercial district, she saw them. Two elderly figures were huddled together under a thin, leaking canopy. It was Arthur and Martha.

Arthur was shivering in a tattered flannel shirt, holding a cardboard sign, while Martha clung to him for warmth. Lily stepped out of her luxury car, tears streaming down her face. "I told you beggars to get off my property!" Harold yelled, waving a hand dismissively. "Move along before I call the police!"
