The dusty rural border crossing at San Ramon was rarely a place of high drama. Most days, Officer William stood under the baking sun or the cooling dusk, watching empty miles of dirt road stretch into the horizon. His dark grey uniform felt heavy, his tight leather gloves dusty from checking the occasional supply truck. But for the past few weeks, his attention had been captured by a singular, puzzling traveler. Her name was Dorothy, an elderly woman who looked far too fragile for the harsh terrain.

The Daily Ritual

Every evening as the sun dipped below the hills, casting long, desaturated shadows across the checkpoint, Dorothy would appear. She wore a simple beige headscarf and pushed a classic, heavy steel bicycle. Strapped securely to the rear rack was a massive, coarse burlap sack. On this particular evening, William decided he could no longer let his curiosity slide.

As she approached the metal barrier, her breath was shallow, her hands trembling slightly on the handlebars. William stepped forward, his eyes scanning the heavy sack. "What's in there?" he asked, his voice firm but not unkind.

"Just dry grain, officer," Dorothy whispered, her eyes downcast, avoiding his gaze. "Just feed for my animals."

William unzipped his tight glove, reached deep into the burlap opening, and scooped up a handful of the golden, dry grain. He let it pour slowly through his fingers, watching it cascade back into the sack. It was exactly what she said it was. He looked at her anxious, weathered face, feeling a strange twinge of guilt. He patted the sack shut, wiping the dust from his hands.

"Alright. Go ahead," William said, stepping back.

He turned the crank to raise the rusted metal gate. With a soft nod of gratitude, Dorothy pushed her bicycle forward, her small frame silhouetted against the fading orange light as she disappeared down the empty dirt road. But as William watched her go, a persistent feeling of unease settled deep in his chest. Something wasn't right.
