The evening rush hour on the city’s subway was always a test of endurance, but on this particular rainy Tuesday, the air inside the carriage felt exceptionally heavy. The train rattled along the tracks, its dim, flickering lights casting long shadows over the exhausted faces of the commuters. Among them was Hannah, a twenty-four-year-old woman who felt as though she were carrying the weight of the world on her fragile shoulders. Draped in an oversized, baggy gray hooded sweatshirt, she sat in the corner seat, her eyes closed, desperately trying to block out the noise and the overwhelming nausea that had plagued her all afternoon.

For Hannah, every breath was an effort. She had spent the last several hours at the clinic, undergoing another grueling round of chemotherapy. The treatment left her drained to her very bones, and the simple act of sitting upright felt like climbing a mountain. She kept her hood pulled low, seeking a tiny sanctuary of privacy amidst the crowded carriage.

The train screeched to a halt at a busy downtown station, and a fresh wave of passengers poured inside. Among them was Clara, an elegant older woman wearing a striking red winter coat. Her gray hair was styled in a pristine, neat bob, and she carried herself with an air of unquestionable authority. Clara scanned the crowded car, her eyes landing on Hannah. Seeing a young person occupying a seat while she was forced to stand, Clara’s expression hardened.

She marched over, stopping directly in front of Hannah, and tapped her foot impatiently. When Hannah didn't react, Clara reached out and poked her shoulder.

A Public Confrontation

"Don't you know you should yield your seat to an elderly person?"
Clara’s sharp voice cut through the ambient rumble of the train, drawing the immediate attention of nearby passengers.

Hannah opened her eyes, her vision blurry, and looked up at the towering figure.

"I'm tired,"
she whispered, her voice barely audible. But Clara was not satisfied. Scowling deeply, she snapped back,
"That is no excuse. You are rude, selfish, and have no manners."
Uncomfortable murmurs rippled through the onlookers, some nodding in agreement with Clara's harsh judgment.

Feeling the burning gaze of the entire carriage, Hannah reached up with trembling hands and slowly pulled back her hood. The silence that followed was absolute. Beneath the fabric, Hannah was completely bald, her pale, delicate scalp reflecting the harsh, fluorescent lights. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, her face instantly draining of color.
