The screeching of the subway wheels against the iron tracks did little to drown out the pounding headache throbbing behind Chloe’s eyes. At just twenty-four, her world had shrunk to the sterile walls of the oncology ward and the grueling commute back to her cramped apartment. Today had been especially brutal—six hours hooked to an IV, watching the toxic, life-saving fluids drip slowly into her veins. Every muscle in her body ached, and her stomach churned with a deep, persistent nausea. All she wanted was to close her eyes and pretend, even for a moment, that she was normal.

When she had boarded the crowded train, she counted herself incredibly lucky to find a single empty seat near the door. Sliding into it, Chloe pulled the oversized hood of her dark navy sweatshirt low over her face, seeking a cocoon of safety.

But that safety was shattered a few stops later.

A Harsh Demand

A shadow fell over her, cold and imposing. Chloe opened her eyes to see a stern older woman standing directly in front of her. The woman, Clara, had silver hair pulled back into a flawless, tight bun, and her wire-rimmed glasses caught the harsh fluorescent light of the carriage.

"Don't you know you should yield your seat to an elderly person?"

Clara’s voice was loud, sharp, and dripping with authority. Instantly, the chatter in the subway car died down. Dozens of eyes turned to Chloe.

Terrified and too weak to defend herself, Chloe looked up.

"I'm tired,"

she whispered, her voice cracking.

Clara’s face contorted into a deep scowl.

"That is no excuse. You are rude, selfish, and have no manners whatsoever."

The public humiliation was too much to bear. As uncomfortable commuters looked away, Chloe’s trembling hands reached up. Slowly, she lowered her hood, revealing her completely bald head, a silent testament to her battle.
