My Boss Tried to Fire Me Over an Old Watch, Until the Owner's True Identity Was Revealed
The air inside Sterling & Co. was thick with the scent of expensive leather and polished mahogany. Under the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, the city’s elite whispered over diamond-encrusted timepieces. Liam, a young clerk wearing a dark navy vest, meticulously wiped down a glass showcase. He loved the history of watchmaking, treating every gear and spring with reverence. His manager, Sarah, stood nearby, her black business suit tailored to perfection, her eyes scanning the room like a hawk looking for wealthy prey.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors opened, and an elderly woman in a wheelchair rolled inside. Her coat was worn, and her hands trembled as she steered herself toward Liam’s counter. She didn't fit the store’s glamorous aesthetic, and Sarah’s face immediately darkened.

The woman, whose name was Clara, reached into her pocket and pulled out a dusty, scratched vintage watch. She placed it gently onto the pristine glass showcase.
"Can you help me?" Clara asked softly. "It stopped ticking."
Before Liam could speak, Sarah marched over, her heels clicking aggressively on the marble. She sneered openly at the watch.
"We don't repair trash here," Sarah said coldly. "Please leave before you disturb our actual clients."
Liam felt a spark of defiance. He picked up the watch, carefully wiping the dust away, and gently fastened it onto Clara’s frail wrist.
"To her, it matters," Liam replied, looking Sarah in the eye.
Sarah leaned in, whispering fiercely,
"You're going to lose your job over this, Liam."
Unfazed, Clara reached into her pocket and pulled out an old paper envelope containing a faded black-and-white photograph. It showed a young man wearing the exact same watch.
"My husband wore it here," Clara murmured.
Liam looked from the photograph to the massive oil painting of the store's founder, Arthur Sterling, hanging on the wall. The resemblance was unmistakable.
"Is he... the founder?" Liam asked.
Clara looked up, her eyes filled with quiet dignity.
"And I am his wife," she said.
