"I must have left it active when I went to get the paperwork,"

Jeff lied, though his own eyes darted around the room, sensing something was wrong. Amber pressed her back against the wall behind the locker, her hand slowly reaching for the combat knife strapped to her boot. She was outnumbered and outgunned, but she refused to go down without a fight.

Just as Miller reached for the mouse to inspect the system logs, the fire alarm down the hall suddenly blared. Smoke began to billow from the breakroom—a distraction Amber had set up with a timed heating element before entering the office. The sudden chaos distracted both men.

"Clear the building!"

Jeff yelled, rushing out of the room. Miller cursed and followed closely behind him.

Amber seized the fraction of a second. By the time the fire department arrived and the smoke cleared, Amber was miles away, driving down the empty highway with the truth securely in her pocket.

Two days later, the encrypted files were leaked to federal prosecutors. The documents proved a massive web of corruption, fully exonerating Amber and placing Captain Miller behind bars for life. Jeff's private security firm was shut down under investigation, but Amber finally had her life back. As she stood on a cliff overlooking the desert, she knew she would never have to hide in the shadows again. Sometimes, proving you belong on the firing line is just the first step to taking back your destiny.
