A Knock at the Door

The morning of Arthur’s fifty-eighth birthday had started with laughter and the sweet aroma of freshly baked lemon cake. The light blue clapboard house, nestled in a quiet American suburb, had been the anchor of the family for over three decades. But the warmth inside was shattered by a heavy, authoritative pounding on the front door. When Chloe opened it, she was met not by a well-wisher, but by the cold, unyielding gaze of Detective Vance. Flanked by two uniformed officers, the detective stood in her dark charcoal blazer, holding a clipboard like a weapon.

Arthur hurried to the door, his smile vanishing as he saw the badge. Martha followed closely behind, her hands trembling as she clutched her husband's navy blue polo shirt. The detective didn't waste time on pleasantries. She handed Arthur the papers, her voice flat and devoid of empathy. It was an eviction notice, effective immediately. The bank had foreclosed on the property.

"There must be some mistake," Arthur stammered, his face turning pale under the overcast daylight. "I paid off this mortgage five years ago. I have the deeds. This is our home!"

But Detective Vance was unmoved. She gave a sharp nod to the officers, who immediately began carrying out cardboard boxes, moving toward the wooden steps of the porch. Martha let out a soft whimpering cry, unable to comprehend how their entire life was being hauled away in broad daylight. They were forced onto the wooden steps, watching in utter disbelief as their belongings were loaded into a waiting truck.

Standing at the bottom of the stairs, Arthur held his trembling wife close, while Chloe looked on in absolute shock. The reality focused on Arthur's desperate, tear-streaked face as he pleaded with the authorities.

"You can't just take everything we own," Arthur cried, his voice cracking with a mixture of rage and sorrow.

Detective Vance stood at the top of the steps, arms crossed, looking down at the devastated family. Her response was chillingly simple.

"The bank owns it now, Arthur," she replied coldly.

As the reality of the eviction settled in, Chloe noticed a black sedan idling across the street. Inside sat her uncle Julian, watching with a sinister smirk.
