The Secret in the Shadows
The silence that followed Elise's words was deafening, broken only by the sound of Chloe dropping her bouquet onto the stone floor. Chaos erupted instantly. David’s mother, Eleanor, stood up from the front row, her face flushed with anger as she screamed for security to throw the intruders out. But David couldn't move. He was staring at the twins, Lily and Maya, seeing his own father's features written all over their young faces.
"What is the meaning of this, Elise?" David demanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of shock and rising anger. "You left six years ago. You vanished without a single word, and now you show up at my wedding with two children?"

Elise took a deep breath, squeezing her daughters' hands to comfort them. She didn't look at the angry guests or at the weeping bride. Her eyes remained locked on David.
"I didn't want to leave you, David," Elise said, her voice trembling but clear. "I was forced to. Six years ago, when I found out I was pregnant, your mother cornered me. She told me she would ruin my family's business and ensure my parents lost everything if I didn't disappear. She paid off my family's debts behind your back and told me you wanted nothing to do with a middle-class girl."
David spun around to look at his mother. Eleanor’s furious expression instantly crumbled into panic. She tried to deny it, but the guilt on her face was undeniable. Elise continued, explaining that she had raised the girls alone, never intending to disrupt David's life. But recently, Lily had fallen desperately ill with a rare condition requiring incredibly expensive medical treatment. When Elise begged Eleanor for help, Eleanor coldly turned her away and threatened her again.
"I had no choice," Elise whispered, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "I had to save my daughter. I had to let you know they existed."
