The Fortune Is Finally Mine

The study smelled of old leather and betrayal. Under the crystal chandelier, the silver tea service gleamed like a mocking reminder of everything my family had built—and everything Damon was about to steal.

I sat in my usual armchair, dark wrap glasses hiding eyes that had seen every move he'd made for the past three years. The white cane rested against my knee, a prop in a performance that had become second nature.

Beside me, nine-year-old Maya trembled, her yellow sundress a splash of innocence in a room thick with greed. She clutched the edge of the bedside table like it was a lifeline.

"The fortune is finally mine!" Damon's voice dripped with triumph as he leaned over me, the forged power-of-attorney pen inches from my hand. His slicked-back hair caught the light, his tailored suit immaculate—a wolf in designer clothing.

I didn't move. My lips stayed sealed. My breathing stayed even.

"Don't look so tragic, Sophia," he said, his sneer widening. "You're blind. You can't sign a check, let alone run an empire. I'm just... helping you retire."

Maya stepped forward, her small voice cracking. "Please stop hurting our family!"

Damon's hand shot out, shoving her back with a cruel flick of his wrist. "Quiet, brat. Or I'll have you sent to that boarding school in Switzerland—the one with the strict nuns."

My heart twisted. But I didn't move. Not yet.

Maya's tears fell freely now, rolling down her flushed cheeks. Her lower lip quivered as she looked at me, searching for a sign, for anything that would tell her this nightmare would end.

I gave her nothing—just a subtle tightening of my fingers around the white cane.

Damon turned back to me, his grin wolfish. "You know, I've waited years for this moment. Ever since your father left everything to you instead of me. But now... now you're just a blind little bird in a gilded cage."

He reached for my hand, intending to force the pen into my palm. "Sign the paper, Sophia. Make this easy for everyone."

I stayed silent. My jaw set. My fingers tightened.

Maya tried again, stepping between us. "Don't touch her! She's sick! She can't even see what you're doing!"

Damon laughed, a cold sound that echoed off the reinforced glass walls. "Oh, I'm counting on that."

He lunged toward Maya, his hand raised to strike.

And that's when I moved.

I ripped off the dark glasses, revealing clear, blazing brown eyes. In one fluid motion, I stood up, caught his wrist mid-air, and squeezed until his bones ground together.

"Let go of my brother," I said, my voice clear and fearless.

Damon's face drained of color. His pupils dilated in sheer terror. "You—you can see?"

I held his gaze, feeling a surge of power I hadn't felt in years. "I never lost my sight, Damon. I've been watching you the whole time."

Maya gasped, her tears turning to amazement. "Sophia... you—you're not blind?"

"No, sweetheart," I said, my voice softening for her. "I've been waiting for this moment."

I reached for the brooch on my navy cashmere sweater—an antique piece my mother had given me. I pressed a tiny button on its side, and a micro-camera blinked to life.

"Meet my little insurance policy," I said, holding it up to Damon's ashen face. "Every word you've said, every threat, every forged document—recorded in 8K clarity."

Damon's knees buckled. "That's—that's illegal!"

"So is fraud, theft, and attempted assault on a minor," I said, my voice icy. "The police are already on their way."

As if on cue, the study doors burst open. Uniformed officers flooded the room, their steel handcuffs glinting in the chandelier light.

"Security, lock him in cuffs," I said, my voice steady.

Damon sagged as the cuffs snapped onto his wrists. "This isn't over, Sophia. You haven't won—"

"Oh, I think I have," I said, wrapping my arm around Maya's shoulders. She buried her face in my sweater, sobbing with relief.

As they dragged Damon away, I looked at the forged power-of-attorney paper still lying on the table. I picked it up, turned it over, and smiled at the tiny print on the back.

"You know what, Damon?" I called after him. "You should have read the fine print. That paper gives me the right to freeze all your assets—including the offshore accounts you've been hiding."

His face went white as they shoved him into the police car.

Maya looked up at me, her eyes wide. "Sophia... what happens now?"

I kissed her forehead. "Now, little brother, we find out who else was in on this."

The police had Damon, but the real conspiracy was just beginning.
