At her feet lay three black plastic garbage bags, stuffed hastily with her clothes, and a worn-out duffel bag that held the remaining fragments of her thirty-two years of life. The dusk was settling over the quiet neighborhood, casting long, ominous shadows across the manicured lawns. But Emily’s eyes were fixed on the brightly lit porch of her childhood home.

There, framed by the warm glow of the entryway, stood her family. Her mother, Helen, stood tall and unyielding, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. Beside her was Emily’s younger sister, Sarah, whose expression was a chilling mask of indifference. The front door was wide open, yet it felt like a fortress wall. There was no warmth emanating from within, only a suffocating, icy silence that seemed to freeze the very air between them.

Emily ran a trembling hand over her face, her fingers brushing against the cold tears dampening her cheeks. Her blonde hair, tied back in a messy ponytail, whipped against her neck in the breeze. She looked back at them, her eyes pleading for a shred of the love she had known her entire life.

"Where am I supposed to go?"
