Previously: At sixty-three, Edward finally graduated college alongside his son. But their tears of joy turned to terror when an estranged relative arrived with a decades-old secret contract.

The Price of Success

As Edward navigated the sea of congratulations, a tall, imposing figure stepped directly into his path. The man’s tailored cashmere coat and cold, calculating expression stood out sharply against the joyful crowd. It was Richard Vance, Edward’s estranged younger brother and a ruthless real estate mogul.

The warmth drained from Edward’s face instantly.

"Richard? What are you doing here?"
Edward asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Richard let out a dry, mocking chuckle, looking down at Edward's maroon gown.

"I came to see the grand spectacle. A sixty-three-year-old man finally getting a piece of paper. Tell me, Edward, did you really think this makes up for forty years of being a nobody?"

Karen stepped forward, her face pale but her posture defensive.

"Leave us alone, Richard. This is a day of celebration. You have no right to be here."

Without a word, Richard pulled a thick manila envelope from his coat pocket and thrust it against Edward’s chest. Edward’s hands shook as he opened the seal, pulling out a document dated from the winter of 1984. It was the agreement Edward had signed when he desperately borrowed money from Richard to cover Karen's medical bills. At the time, Edward had signed away his rights to his early engineering designs, but there was a hidden clause he had long forgotten: a strict non-compete that prohibited Edward from ever obtaining an engineering degree or practicing in the field, under penalty of a two-million-dollar forfeiture.

"You broke the covenant, big brother,"
Richard whispered maliciously.
"By graduating today, you triggered the penalty. I’ll see you in court on Monday to seize your assets, your home, and your precious son's future career."

Edward felt the room spin. The gold stole around his neck felt like a heavy iron chain, dragging him into an abyss of despair just moments after his greatest triumph.
