Previously: When Natalie's father demands her resignation to favor his new wife, she unleashes an emergency protocol that uncovers a devastating ten-year-old family secret.

The Secret in the Dark

The drive to the Vance Group headquarters was a blur of flashing streetlights and ringing phone calls. Natalie ignored them all. She knew that the emergency protocol had frozen every corporate asset, but she also knew her father would try to access the primary servers to delete the evidence of his financial misconduct.

When she unlocked the doors to the executive suite, she found the office dark, except for the eerie blue glow of the main computer terminal. Sitting at her desk was not a hired hacker, but Arthur himself, looking frantic and defeated.

"Natalie, you don't understand," Arthur stammered, jumping up as she walked in. "I had to protect us. Victoria... she found out about the offshore accounts."

Natalie stared at him, her heart hardening.

"You stole millions from the company I built, Dad. To protect us, or to protect your own ego?"

Before Arthur could answer, the door behind Natalie clicked. Victoria walked in, her heels clicking sharply on the hardwood floor. She held a black USB drive in her hand, her eyes flashing with venomous triumph.

"He didn't do it for himself, Natalie," Victoria purred. "He did it because I made him. And if you don't call off the board's emergency protocol right now, this drive goes to the federal prosecutors."
"What is on that drive, Victoria?" Natalie demanded, a cold dread settling in her stomach.

Victoria smiled, a terrifying expression of pure malice.

"The real police report from the night your mother died. Your father didn't just lose control of the car, Natalie. He knew the vehicle had severe mechanical issues, yet he let her drive it anyway to collect a massive life insurance policy. He built this entire empire on her blood."

Natalie gasped, looking at her father. Arthur bowed his head, tears streaming down his face, unable to deny the horrific truth.
