Previously: When Mark saw a young stranger sitting in front of his aggressive, chained Rottweiler, he feared the worst. But as the beast calmed, a shocking family secret came to light.

Mark stood frozen in the amber sunset, staring at the impossible sight of his vicious guard dog sleeping peacefully in the stranger's lap. The silence on the ranch was deafening, broken only by the soft, rhythmic breathing of the animal. Slowly, Mark took a step forward, his eyes scanning the young man's face. There was something agonizingly familiar about the slope of his shoulders, the quiet strength in his posture, and the deep green of his eyes. When Leo looked up, the breath completely left Mark's lungs.

A Ghost from the Past

"Leo?"
Mark whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of hope and terror.
"Is it really you?"

Leo stood up slowly, gently laying Maya's head on the grass.

"It's me, Dad,"
he replied quietly, his voice steady but carrying the weight of ten years of exile. Mark took a step back, overwhelmed. A decade ago, after a devastating barn fire claimed his wife's life, Mark had blamed Leo in his grief-stricken madness, banishing his fifteen-year-old son from the ranch. Now, looking at the grown man before him, the realization of his monumental mistake began to dawn on him.

Before Mark could find the words to apologize, a sharp voice cut through the evening air.

"What is he doing here?"
Uncle Thomas, Mark's younger brother, walked briskly from the main house, his face pale and eyes darting nervously. Thomas had taken over the ranch's financial operations after the tragedy, always whispering poison in Mark's ear about Leo's supposed negligence. Seeing Leo back on the property, Thomas looked less angry and more deeply afraid. Leo looked directly at his uncle, his expression hardening.
"I came back for my mother's journal, Thomas,"
Leo said, refusing to call him uncle.
"The one you claimed burned in the fire. But I know it didn't. And I know what really happened that night."
Thomas's hands began to shake as Mark looked between them, a terrible suspicion finally taking root in his heart.
