The Mask of Innocence

The security guards hesitated, recognizing Cleo as August’s eldest daughter. The tension in the ballroom was palpable, the silence spreading like wildfire as hundreds of eyes locked onto the family drama unfolding on the stage.

"I am only here to deliver a toast, Father," Cleo said, her voice surprisingly steady, carrying clearly through the quiet room. She took a slow sip of her champagne, never breaking eye contact with the man who had abandoned her.

August sneered, stepping closer to whisper threats. "If you make a scene, Cleo, I will ensure you never work in this city again. I will cut you off completely. You have nothing."

"You already did that, August," Cleo replied, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You and Brenda took everything when you forged Mother's signature on her deathbed."

Brenda let out another sharp gasp, her face turning translucent. "That's a lie! You're just jealous because David chose me!" she hissed, though her trembling hands betrayed her terror. The white blossoms in her bouquet began to shed their petals, fluttering to the polished floor like snow.

August looked panicked now. He raised his hand to signal his men to drag Cleo out by force. "Get her out of here! She is mentally unstable!" he roared to the crowd, trying to salvage his reputation. But Cleo was prepared. She reached into her clutch and pulled out a small black remote control, pointing it directly at the massive projection screen behind the stage, which had been set up to show a slideshow of Brenda and David’s romance.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Cleo warned, her thumb hovering over the button. "Because if your security touches me, the entire city is going to see exactly where Brenda's dowry came from."
