Mark approached slowly, his boots crunching softly on the gravel. He stared at Leo as if the young man were a ghost. Maya, who had bitten two experienced trainers and spent her days snarling at the sky, was sleeping like a puppy. Her tail gave a lazy, contented thump against the dirt.

"I don't understand,"

Mark whispered, his voice trembling.

"How did you do that? She hasn't let anyone touch her in a year. Not even me. Ever since my son, Toby, passed away... she's been completely wild. We were supposed to put her down next week because she's a danger to everyone."

Leo felt a sharp pang of sorrow in his chest. He looked down at the beautiful dog, gently scratching behind her ears. He knew exactly why Maya was calm. She didn't just smell a stranger; she recognized something deep within him. But how could he explain the unexplainable to a grieving father?

Mark demanded, his tone hardening.
