Leo gently ran his fingers through Maya’s thick fur, noticing several old, jagged scars near her collar. "Who did this to her, Dad?" Leo asked, his voice hardening. "This isn't a bad dog. This is a terrified animal who has been abused."

Mark sighed, looking suddenly older, the weight of the ranch pressing down on his shoulders. He confessed that after Leo left, the ranch fell into severe financial ruin. Desperate to save the family legacy, Mark had taken a massive loan from Clyde, a ruthless local landowner. Clyde had brought Maya to the ranch, using her to guard his illicit shipments and hiring a brutal trainer to keep her aggressive.

The door slammed shut, and Clyde stepped out. In his right hand, he carried a heavy iron rod, his face twisted in a malicious scowl.

Clyde bellowed, marching toward them.
