Previously: When Officer James tied his own partner, Megan, to a tree in a desolate forest, he thought he had committed the perfect crime—until a sudden flash of police lights changed everything.

The Unseen Betrayal

James spun around, his hand instinctively dropping to his service weapon. The flashing lights grew more intense, casting long, erratic shadows across the forest floor. He expected to see Captain Miller or a fleet of patrol cars invading the clearing. Instead, the silence of the woods remained unbroken, save for the rhythmic, haunting crunch of heavy boots stepping on dry leaves.

Out of the strobe-lit shadows stepped a figure, but it was not the rescue Megan had anticipated. It was Marcus Vance, the notorious leader of the local syndicate James had been secretly serving. A cold dread settled in Megan’s stomach. This was not a police rescue; it was a rendezvous.

"You're late, James," Vance said, his voice smooth and terrifyingly calm as he stepped into the clearing. "And you brought company."

James stammered, pointing his gun at Megan. "She knows everything, Vance. She found the ledger in my locker. I had to put her down, but she did something to the cruiser's transponder. The lights are an automated distress beacon!"

Megan realized then the depths of James's desperation. He had rigged her patrol car to look like a police interception to confuse any trackers while he finished the job. But Vance was not a man who tolerated complications. He looked at Megan, then back at James, a cruel smile playing on his lips.

"A distress beacon means we have exactly five minutes before the real deputies arrive," Vance noted, drawing a silenced pistol from his coat. "Which means you failed to keep this quiet, James. And I don't pay for failure."

In a desperate bid for survival, James grabbed Megan, using her tied body as a shield. He backed toward the edge of the ravine, his gun pressed against her temple. The betrayal was complete, but the stakes had just escalated to a lethal degree.
