The Gala That Was Supposed to Celebrate an Heir

The Vienna Symphony Hall glittered like a jewel box inside a royal vault. Gilded rococo moldings caught the warm glow of classical sconces, and the polished parquet floor reflected the shimmering gowns and black tuxedos drifting through the Royal Box Corridor. It was the night I, Olivier Valois, was to announce my legacy—my unborn grandchild, the heir Victoria had promised me.

I stood beside my 7-year-old granddaughter, Lily, her braided chestnut hair neat against her navy velvet dress. She was a quiet child, still healing from the car accident that took her parents and left her in my care. I’d bought her a modest gold locket for tonight—a small piece of her mother’s memory. She wore it proudly, though she hadn’t smiled all evening.

Victoria descended the marble steps like a serpent in rose-gold sequins. Her high diamond bun caught the light as she glided toward us, one hand resting on the exaggerated curve of her belly—the belly that carried my hope for the Valois dynasty. Edward, my son, followed two steps behind, his bespoke tuxedo immaculate but his eyes fixed on his polished shoes.

“Olivier, darling,” Victoria cooed, pressing a kiss to my cheek that left a faint trace of expensive perfume. She didn’t even glance at Lily. “The orchestra is about to start. I want to be front and center for the announcement.”

I nodded, but before I could speak, Lily stepped forward, clutching her small toy rabbit—the one she’d carried since the accident. She reached toward Victoria’s gown, perhaps to touch the glittering fabric, perhaps just to be included.

Victoria’s hand shot out, diamond-encrusted clutch striking Lily’s knuckles with a sharp crack. The toy rabbit dropped to the floor.

“Move out of the spotlight, you worthless little brat!” Victoria’s shrill soprano cut through the murmur of the corridor. “This gala is celebrating the billionaire heir inside my belly, not a penniless charity case!”

Lily shrank back against my leg, tears pooling on her lower eyelids but never falling. She remained silent, her mouth firmly closed, her small body trembling. I felt a hot spike of anger, but the words stuck in my throat. I’d seen Victoria’s temper before, but never in public. Never like this.

Edward looked away, his jaw tight. He said nothing. I said nothing. The silence was a betrayal thicker than any lie.

Victoria smoothed her sequined gown and turned to the mirror, adjusting her bun. The baby bump—her prized asset—hung slightly low, but she didn’t seem to notice. She smiled at her reflection, oblivious to the tiny hands that had just been struck.

Lily tugged my sleeve. Her small finger trembled as she pointed at Victoria’s midsection. “Grandpa…” she whispered, her voice clear and innocent, cutting through the orchestra’s tuning. “Her tummy pillow is upside down! It slid down to her knees when she kicked my toy!”

The corridor went still. Victoria’s smirk froze into sheet-white panic. Her hand flew to her belly, pressing against the foam, but it was too late. I stared at the crooked line of the belt, the mesh waistband visible beneath the sequins.

Edward’s eyes widened. He took a half-step back. I stepped forward, my heart hammering against my ribs like a drumbeat of doom.

Victoria opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. She remained silent, her lips pressed into a thin, bloodless line.

I reached for the silk wrap shawl draped over her shoulders and flipped it open. The memory-foam prosthetic belt hung there, buckled crookedly around her hips, the padding slipped three inches below her waist. Under the chandelier light, it looked like a grotesque joke.

“Look at this hollow silicone strap,” I roared, my gravelly voice echoing off the gilded walls. “You faked an heir to rob my bloodline and abused this innocent child in my own hall!”

Victoria clutched her flattened gown, her face a mask of terror. Edward stared at the floor. Lily watched, her eyes wide, her mouth still closed.

That’s when Rocco, my head bodyguard, lunged forward. “Out of the way, sir—she ordered me to clear you and the kid out of the VIP lounge!”

I caught his wrist mid-air, my forearm driving into his chest with a force that surprised even me. He hit the carpet with a heavy thud, gasping for breath.

I straightened my tuxedo, the platinum signet ring glinting. The corridor was silent, every eye on me. I turned to the crowd, my voice booming with lethal calm. “Security, throw this con artist and my spineless son into the street—every trust fund, villa, and share is stripped from your names tonight!”

Victoria collapsed to her knees, her gown pooling around her. Edward followed, grabbing at my sleeve, but I shook him off. I wrapped my arm around Lily, pulling her close. Her cheek rested against my lapel, and for the first time that night, a single tear slid down her face.

I looked at the prosthetic belly lying on the crystal table, then at my son, then at the woman who had nearly destroyed my family. This was only the beginning.
