They Handed Me a Forced Resignation, But I Had a Million-Dollar Secret
The amber glow of the custom sconces inside the private dining room of Le Petit Chateaux did nothing to warm the freezing atmosphere at the table. Sarah sat perfectly straight in her elegant black pantsuit, her strawberry blonde hair catching the low light. Around her sat four people she had called her colleagues, her friends, and her professional family for the last decade. But looking at their cold, averted eyes, she realized they were nothing but vultures.
The Ambush Dinner
Richard, the senior partner, cleared his throat and slid a thick manila envelope across the crisp white tablecloth, stopping it right next to her untouched glass of Cabernet.

"We're restructuring, Sarah," Richard said, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "The board feels your division is no longer aligned with our long-term goals. We need your signed resignation tonight."
The other three partners nodded silently, refusing to meet her gaze. They expected tears. They expected her to beg for the meager severance package they had thrown in like table scraps. For months, they had plotted to freeze her out, stealing her clients and undermining her authority, hoping she would break.
But Sarah did not cry. Instead, she slowly stood up, her commanding presence drawing the attention of the surrounding tables. With a calm, defiant look, she reached into her designer handbag. She didn't pull out a pen.
With a swift, triumphant motion, Sarah pulled out a thick, bound stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills. She fanned the money out directly in front of her face, waving the green fan with a smug, victorious smile.
The colleagues gasped, their smug expressions instantly evaporating into sheer disbelief.
"What is this nonsense?" Richard hissed, his face flushing crimson. "Are you losing your mind, Sarah?"
"Not at all, Richard," Sarah replied, her voice steady and clear. "I'm just showing you my first retainer payment. You see, while you were planning my demise, I was securing my future."
