The Slamming of the Forged Will

The chateau's probate salon felt like a tomb. Dust motes floated in the golden sunset light that poured through the arched French doors, but no warmth touched the room. Six-year-old Maya knelt on the terracotta tiles, her curly dark hair tied with a white ribbon, her pastel yellow sundress pooling around her like a wilted flower. In her small hands, she clutched a hollow carved wooden chess king—her father's last gift.

Across from her, Malcolm stood like a vulture in a charcoal pinstripe suit. His narrow spectacles caught the light as he slammed a document onto the weathered oak refectory table. The sound cracked through the silence, and Maya flinched. The forged last will and testament—the one that named her step-parent as sole heir—lay there, mocking her.

"Send this fake heir away!" Malcolm's voice was slow, deliberate, cruel. His nostrils flared as he pointed a manicured finger at Maya, his red silk tie gleaming like a wound.

Maya's lower lip trembled. Tears glistened on her eyelids, but she didn't cry. Her father had taught her to be brave, even when the giants in suits came to take everything.

At the head of the table, Judge Desmond Locke watched in silence. His sharp patrician features were carved from stone, his grey hair immaculate. He narrowed his eyes, but he said nothing. He was waiting.

Malcolm straightened his jacket, confidence radiating from him like heat. "The will is clear. The step-parent inherits everything. The child gets nothing."

Maya's fingers tightened around the wooden chess king. She felt the hollow weight of it, the secret she'd been carrying since her father died. She looked up at the judge, her tear-streaked cheeks catching the light.

"Please don't believe her lies," she whispered, her voice trembling but clear. She lifted the locked leather probate pouch toward the judge, her hands shaking so hard she almost dropped it.

Malcolm's smirk faltered for just a second. He hadn't expected this. "That's nothing," he snapped. "A child's toy."

Judge Locke leaned forward, his eyes fixed on the pouch. He reached out with a commanding hand and took it from Maya. The small silver key was still in the lock, glinting like a promise.

"Bring me that sealed cylinder," he said slowly, his voice low and firm. Malcolm swallowed hard, beads of sweat appearing on his temple. Maya watched, her breath held, hope flickering in her chest.

The judge broke the seal under the bright light. The room held its breath.
