The Challenge in the Ravine

The mist hung heavy and cold in the deep, steep-walled rocky ravine, clinging to the jagged stone walls like a shroud. At the center of this forgotten canyon stood a fractured monolith, an ancient stone block cracked by time and elements. Deeply embedded within its heart was a magnificent broadsword, its leather-wrapped hilt pristine despite the centuries. Commander Borin, a burly, dark-haired warrior clad in heavily scarred steel plate armor, stepped forward with heavy, echoing strides. He was the champion of the realm, a man whose strength was legendary.

Borin gripped the hilt with both of his massive hands, his knuckles turning white. He spat on the gravel and began to pull, his face turning a deep crimson as the muscles in his neck and shoulders strained to their absolute limits. He grunted, pouring every ounce of his legendary physical power into the attempt, but the sword remained utterly motionless, fused to the stone as if it were a single piece of rock. Finally, gasping for breath and defeated, he released his grip and turned to his waiting men.

"If I couldn't pull it out, no one can," Borin grumbled, his voice filled with bitter pride.

The knights murmured in disappointed agreement, preparing to turn back. But from the rear of the crowd, a slender, ash-dusted boy named Arthur stepped forward. Clad in a faded brown tunic, he looked fragile compared to the towering armored men. Yet, there was an unwavering light in his eyes. He walked past the whispering knights, stopping directly in front of the monolith. He looked up at the legendary hilt, feeling a strange, magnetic pull in his chest.

"I am Arthur," he said with quiet resolve. "And I am going to claim you."

With a steady breath, Arthur reached out. His small, dirt-streaked hand closed firmly around the leather-wrapped hilt, and the world seemed to hold its breath.
