Previously: When Thomas stopped at a street pastry cart on a rainy afternoon, he expected a simple snack. Instead, a single bite unlocked a long-buried family secret he never saw coming.

The Shadow of the Past

Before Thomas could wrap his arms around the mother he had believed dead or indifferent for thirty years, the sharp screech of tires echoed through the narrow street. A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb. The door flew open, and Eleanor, the wealthy matriarch who had raised Thomas in a mansion of cold rules, stepped out. Her face was twisted in a mixture of panic and pure venom. She marched toward the pastry cart, her designer heels clicking loudly on the wet stones.

"Get away from him!"
Eleanor shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Clara.
"I paid you a fortune to stay out of our lives! I told you what would happen if you ever approached my son!"

Thomas stood between the two women, his mind reeling.

"Mother, what is going on here?"
he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.
"Do you know her?"

Eleanor attempted to grab Thomas’s arm, her voice suddenly softening into a manipulative purr.

"Thomas, darling, she is a delusional thief. She sold you to us when you were a baby because she couldn't afford to feed you. She’s just trying to extort us."

But Clara did not back down this time. Standing tall despite her frail frame, she pulled another document from her apron pocket—a faded, official-looking hospital release form from thirty years ago.

"I never sold my baby, Eleanor,"
Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous anger.
"You and your husband used your political connections to declare me unfit while I was in a medically induced coma after a terrible accident. You forged my signature on the adoption papers and threatened to have me jailed if I ever tried to find him!"

Thomas grabbed the faded document from Clara’s hands. As a corporate lawyer, he knew exactly what to look for. His eyes scanned the signature at the bottom. It was a crude forgery of Clara's name, accompanied by a notary stamp belonging to his adoptive father’s old law firm. The pieces of his cold, loveless childhood suddenly fell into place.
