The Prophecy of the Gorge

The narrow rocky gorge of Oakhaven was choked with a cold, clinging mist that seemed to swallow the very breath of the men gathered within it. For three centuries, the legendary sword of the Old Kings had remained embedded in a cracked, dark boulder, its steel pristine despite the passage of ages. Many had tried to claim it, but the stone held its prize with an iron grip. Today, the kingdom's most feared warlord, Borin, intended to break the cycle.

Clad in heavy, dark iron armor, Borin stepped forward, his rugged, brown beard dusted with frost. He was a giant of a man, a warrior who had never known defeat on the battlefield. Gripping the leather-wrapped hilt with both hands, he let out a guttural roar that echoed off the high stone walls. His muscles strained, his veins bulging against his weathered skin as he poured every ounce of his legendary strength into the effort. But the sword did not yield. It remained perfectly still, a silent mockery of his ambition.

Borin stepped back, his chest heaving as he spat into the dirt. He turned to his assembled warriors, his eyes burning with frustrated pride. "If I couldn't pull it out, no one can," he grumbled, his voice thick with bitter finality. The soldiers nodded in silent agreement, ready to abandon the sacred site.

Then, a quiet voice broke the heavy silence. "I am Arthur. And I am going to claim you."

Out from the ranks of the armored men stepped a slender young man in a tattered, dirt-smudged tunic. It was Arthur, a lowly stable boy who had spent his life sweeping floors and enduring the cruelty of the lords. The warriors laughed, but Arthur did not waver. He walked past the towering soldiers, his gaze locked entirely on the ancient hilt. Standing before the boulder, he reached out a grimy, trembling hand and firmly gripped the worn leather. The air grew suddenly warm, and the mist began to swirl.
