Dean’s patience snapped. With a guttural growl, he launched a massive, bone-shattering right hook aimed directly at Jade’s temple. To the untrained eye, it was a lethal blow, but to Jade, a former elite defensive tactics instructor, it was slow and clumsy. She slipped the punch with millimeter precision, her head bobbing just out of range. Before Dean could recover his balance, Jade stepped inside his guard, seized his heavy wrist, and drove her elbow directly into his exposed floating ribs. The inmates gasped in disbelief. Nobody had ever made Dean bleed, let alone brought him to his knees. Humiliated and enraged, Dean reached into his waistband and pulled out a crude, six-inch metal shank. The crowd surged back, giving them a wider berth. The guards in the watchtowers raised their rifles but made no move to shoot; they were paid off by Dean’s associates outside.

Dean lunged with the weapon, slashing wildly. Jade retreated, dodging the deadly metal arcs. But as she moved, her shoe caught on a patch of loose gravel. She lost her footing, slipping onto the hard concrete. Dean let out a triumphant laugh, raising the shank to drive it into her chest. Just as the blade descended, Jade used her fallen position to thrust her boots directly into Dean's kneecap. The joint buckled with a loud pop. Dean screamed in agony, dropping the weapon as he collapsed beside her.

Before Jade could stand, the heavy yard doors burst open. A squad of guards rushed in, but instead of arresting Dean, their crooked captain, Officer Miller, pointed his baton directly at Jade. "Get her," Miller ordered. "Assault on an inmate." Jade realized the system was rigged; Dean's reach went far deeper than just the yard.
