Previously: When Jessica was framed by her own sister, she thought all hope was lost. But a pair of white sneakers contained a secret that would change everything.

The Corrupt Alliance

Before Martha could rip the shoes from Jessica's feet, heavy footsteps echoed across the yard. Officer Vance, a guard notorious for his cruelty and easily bought loyalty, strolled toward them. Jessica felt a brief surge of hope, expecting him to intervene, but the cruel smirk on his face quickly shattered her illusions.

"What do we have here?" Vance asked, tapping his nightstick against his palm.

"She's wearing unapproved footwear, boss," Martha lied smoothly, never letting go of Jessica's collar. "I was just helping her comply with prison regulations."

Vance looked down at the pristine white sneakers, then back up at Jessica. "She's right, Jessica. Those shoes are a safety hazard. Hand them over to Martha, or I’ll have to throw you into solitary confinement for insubordination."

Jessica’s mind raced. If she went to solitary, she would miss her scheduled meeting with Sarah, her pro-bono attorney, on Friday. But if she handed over the shoes, Clara's hired thugs would destroy the micro-SD card hidden beneath the inner sole—the only proof of her innocence.

She had to act quickly and cleverly. Pretending to break under the pressure, Jessica let her shoulders slump. "Fine," she whispered. "Just don't put me in solitary."

Martha released her collar with a triumphant grunt. Jessica knelt down, pretending to struggle with the laces. Under the cover of her bent body, her fingers slipped beneath the lining of the left shoe. With practiced ease, she extracted the tiny, plastic-wrapped micro-SD card and slipped it into her mouth, hiding it under her tongue.

She slid the empty sneakers off her feet and handed them to Martha.

"Good girl," Martha sneered, snatching them away. Vance laughed, turning his back on Jessica as she stood barefoot on the scorching concrete. They believed they had won, unaware that Jessica still held the key to her freedom.
