The yard went dead silent. Nobody had ever made Leo stumble, let alone with a single blow. Clutches of inmates whispered in disbelief as Leo stared at his numb hand, his eyes shifting from arrogance to a dangerous, burning rage.
"Who the hell are you?" Leo growled, stepping back to reassess the small woman before him.
Zoe took a step closer, keeping her voice incredibly low so the guards on the watchtowers couldn't hear. "My name is Zoe, and I was framed by the same man who is holding your sister hostage," she whispered. Leo froze, the color draining from his face. Zoe continued, "Warden Vance didn't put me here to be punished. He put me here because I have the evidence of his illegal human trafficking ring—and he told you to kill me so his secrets would stay buried."
Leo’s chest heaved. He had been told his sister was safe with a cartel, but Zoe's words struck a chord of absolute truth. Before he could respond, the heavy iron gates of the yard screeched open. Warden Vance himself marched in, flanked by three heavily armed guards carrying riot shotguns. The warden’s eyes narrowed in fury when he saw Zoe still standing, completely unharmed.
"Leo!" Warden Vance bellowed, raising his shotgun. "Why is she still breathing? Finish the job now, or you know exactly what will happen to your family!"
Leo turned slowly to face the warden, his massive fists clenching until his knuckles turned white. He was trapped between a bullet from the guards and the life of his sister. Zoe looked at Leo, her voice a calm whisper behind him. "If you fight them, we both die. But if you trust me, I can get us both out of here alive. The choice is yours, Leo."
