The Clash on the Front Lawn

The scent of fresh lilies still lingered on the front porch, where the funeral wreath hung like a silent guard over our childhood home. It had only been three days since our mother, Evelyn, had passed away, but my stepbrother Stanley was already treating her estate like a clearance sale. He had scattered open moving boxes across the manicured suburban lawn, tossing her beloved porcelain sets and photo albums into them with reckless abandon.

My sister Claire sat on the porch steps, her face buried in her hands, weeping quietly. I stood beside her, my fists clenched, trying to maintain some semblance of peace. Stanley, a stocky man wearing a light grey sweater, ignored our pleas to stop. He claimed he was the sole heir, asserting a sudden right to everything our mother had left behind.

"This house is mine now, Trent," Stanley sneered, taping shut another box. "Mom knew you and Claire couldn't handle the responsibility."

Before I could respond, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. An older gentleman in a tailored black suit stepped out, holding a thick manila folder. It was Bernard, our mother's trusted attorney. Stanley’s posture immediately stiffened, his face draining of color as Bernard walked up the driveway.

Without warning, Stanley let out a guttural growl and lunged. He tackled Bernard to the ground, sending the attorney's glasses and papers flying across the grass. The camera of my mind whipped in panic. I rushed forward to intervene, desperately grabbing Stanley's shoulder to pull him off the elderly man.

But Stanley's rage was animalistic. He spun around, his thick fingers wrapping tightly around my throat, shoving me backward with terrifying force. He gripped my jaw, pinning me down. I screamed in absolute rage, my voice cracking under the pressure.

"Get off me!" I yelled, clawing at his wrists as Claire screamed in horror from the porch.
