The Briefing Room Standfall

The fluorescent lights of the tactical briefing room hummed with a cold, clinical energy. Maps of the eastern sector lined the walls, covered in complex lines and military markers that represented weeks of tireless planning. Lieutenant Sarah Miller stood perfectly at attention, her spine straight, her hands aligned with the seams of her trousers. She had spent seventy-two straight hours preparing this intelligence brief, ignoring the exhaustion creeping into her bones. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a tight, regulation bun, leaving her face exposed to the harsh glare of the room.

At the head of the long oak table stood General Arthur. He was a stern, grey-haired veteran whose reputation for harsh discipline was surpassed only by his outdated views on who belonged in his command. He didn't look at the detailed maps Sarah had prepared. Instead, his eyes locked onto her with a cold, dismissive sneer. He took a slow step forward, invading her personal space until he was standing just inches away.

With a sudden, aggressive motion, Arthur pointed a thick, calloused finger directly in Sarah's face.

"A woman's place is in the kitchen,"
he shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the secure room. The other officers in the room froze, staring down at their notebooks to avoid witnessing the humiliation.

Arthur wasn't finished. He slammed his heavy hand onto the wooden table, making the plastic coffee cups rattle.

"Bring me a coffee! Right now!"
he yelled, his face turning a deep, angry red as he tried to break her spirit.

Sarah didn't flinch. She looked directly into the eyes of the man who held her entire career in his hands. Her voice was quiet, steady, and utterly unwavering.

"No,"
she said.

Without waiting for his reaction, she turned on her heel and marched out of the room, leaving the stunned General staring at the empty doorway, his face twisted in absolute disbelief.
