Previously: Sitting on her porch, seventy-year-old Evelyn sees the ghosts of her wedding day—leading her to a hidden box that changes everything she knew about her late husband.

The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The study remained exactly as Arthur had left it, filled with the comforting scent of dried tobacco and old leather bound books. Evelyn walked over to the window, her eyes drawn to a section of the floorboards directly beneath the sill. One of the planks looked slightly uneven, as if it had been lifted and replaced hastily years ago. Following a sudden intuition, she fetched a sturdy butter knife from the kitchen and carefully pried the old wood loose.

Beneath the floor lay a dusty, rusted metal lockbox. Evelyn’s heart hammered against her ribs as she retrieved the spare key Arthur always kept in his old tackle box. With a sharp click, the lock yielded. Inside was a stack of old letters tied with a faded blue ribbon, and a yellowed marriage certificate dated 1972—two years before her own wedding to Arthur. The bride’s name was Clara Vance.

"This can't be real,"
Evelyn murmured, her hands trembling as she unfolded the letters. They were written in Arthur’s unmistakable hand, filled with desperate pleas for forgiveness and promises of protection.

Before she could process the shocking discovery, the front door clicked open. Her daughter, Sarah, walked in holding a folder of legal documents. When Sarah saw the open lockbox and the letters scattered across the floor, her face drained of color. She didn't look surprised; she looked deeply guilty.

"Mom, please put those away,"
Sarah whispered, her voice shaking.
"You were never supposed to find out about Clara. Dad made me promise to keep this secret forever."

Evelyn felt the world spinning around her. The man she had loved, the life they had built—was it all a lie? "Who is Clara, Sarah? And why did your father marry her before me?" she demanded, bracing herself for a truth that threatened to shatter her heart.
