A Shattered Evening

The dining room of the Blackwood estate was usually a sanctuary of warmth, but tonight, the air felt heavy and suffocating. Under the soft, golden glow of the minimalist chandelier, our guests laughed and toasted to my husband Julian’s recent success. Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Julian’s smiles were too tight, his laughter too forced. His eyes kept darting to the large French windows, where the thick autumn fog pressed against the glass like a silent intruder.

It happened in a sudden, chaotic blur. Julian stood up to offer another toast, his hand trembling slightly as he reached into his pocket. Instead of his handkerchief, a gleaming object slipped from his grasp and tumbled onto the table, then to the floor. It was a gold pocket watch—an irreplaceable heirloom that belonged to my late grandfather. It was supposed to be locked securely in our study safe.

"Julian, where did you get that?" I asked, my voice trembling as cold dread washed over me.

His face drained of color. He reached down quickly to snatch it, but I stepped forward, desperate for answers. When I tried to grab his arm, Julian panicked. He shoved me away with a sudden, violent force. I stumbled backward, losing my footing on the polished hardwood, and crashed heavily to the floor. The pain in my shoulder was immediate, but the emotional shock was worse. Beside me, the gold pocket watch slid across the dark floorboards, coming to rest next to a shattered wine glass.

Before anyone could react, blinding headlights pierced through the foggy night, casting long, eerie shadows through the French windows. The heavy front doors of the mansion swung open, and a tall figure stepped into the foyer. It was Victor, my estranged brother. Wearing a dark navy wool overcoat and brown leather gloves, he walked into the dining room with an icy calm. Ignoring the gasping guests, he knelt beside me, picked up the ticking pocket watch, and glared at Julian with a terrifying intensity.
