Previously: When a cynical security guard shoves a quiet Navy Lieutenant against a concrete wall, accusing him of stolen valor, a sudden PA announcement turns his aggressive confrontation into absolute shock.

A Connection in the Dark

While the military escort arrived to guide Marcus to his high-priority meeting, the image of the trembling security guard remained burned into his mind. Marcus knew he could have easily filed a formal complaint that would have cost Thomas his job, his pension, and his livelihood. But Marcus saw something in Thomas’s eyes that wasn't just malice—it was a deep, unresolved agony that demanded an explanation.

Once his official duties at the base were wrapped up later that afternoon, Marcus bypassed his ride home and returned to the transit station. He located the security office and found Thomas sitting alone in a dimly lit breakroom, staring blankly at a cold cup of coffee. He looked ten years older than he had just hours before.

"Can I come in?"
Marcus asked gently, knocking on the door frame.

Thomas jumped, looking up with a mixture of fear and embarrassment.

"Lieutenant... I am so sorry. I’ve already written my resignation. I know there's no excuse for what I did to you."

Marcus sat down opposite him at the laminate table.

"I don't want your job, Thomas. I want to know why you attacked me. You looked at me like you wanted to tear me apart."

Thomas hesitated, his hands shaking as he began to speak. He revealed that eight years ago, his son Joey, a young Navy recruit, had gone missing in action. Desperate for answers, Thomas and his wife were approached by a man in a Navy officer's uniform. The man claimed to have inside information and promised he could secure Joey's release from a private captor—for a price of fifty thousand dollars.

"We gave him every penny of our retirement,"
Thomas whispered, a tear escaping his eye.
"The next day, he vanished. A month later, we got official word that Joey had been dead for a year. That monster wore the uniform to rob a grieving family. I saw you today, and I thought you were him."

Thomas reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn, folded photograph. Marcus took the photo, expecting to see a stranger. But as he looked at the face of the man standing next to Joey, his blood ran cold. The man smiling in the photo was his identical twin brother, David, who had vanished years ago after falling into a life of crime.
