Previously: When a bitter security guard accused a decorated Navy lieutenant of wearing a stolen uniform, he expected praise. Instead, a sudden announcement over the transit station's speakers turned his world upside down.

The silence that followed the PA announcement was deafening. Thomas stood paralyzed, his hand hovering near his handcuffs, his face draining of all color. The travelers who had been whispering and recording on their phones suddenly lowered their devices, realizing they had witnessed a grave injustice. Thomas slowly stepped back, his chest heaving as he stared at Marcus in utter disbelief.

The Escalation

"You... you're actually..." Thomas stammered, his voice cracking as the gravity of his mistake began to set in. Before Marcus could answer, the sound of heavy tactical boots echoed through the terminal. Three heavily armed military police officers, accompanied by the transit station's chief of security, pushed through the crowd. They bypassed Thomas entirely, stepping protectively around Marcus.

"Lieutenant Hayes, thank goodness we found you," the lead officer said, saluting Marcus. "We have an emergency. We need your clearance key immediately."

It turned out that Marcus was not just returning from a standard deployment. He was a high-level naval intelligence officer carrying highly classified transit codes for a military transport passing through the city. The security chief turned a furious gaze toward Thomas. "What is the meaning of this? Why were you delaying a federal officer during a high-priority escort?" the chief demanded, his voice dripping with venom.

Thomas looked as if he might faint. He tried to explain that he thought Marcus was an impostor, but his excuses sounded pathetic. The chief of security shook his head in disgust. "You bypassed the security briefing this morning, Thomas. If you had attended, you would have known Lieutenant Hayes was arriving under special protocol. Your negligence has put this entire station at risk." Marcus stood tall, his expression stoic, but he knew that Thomas's mistake was about to cost the older man everything he had worked for.
