A Sickening Betrayal

The tension in the fast-food restaurant was thick enough to cut with a knife. As James stood there, demanding answers, Rachel looked closely at the emerald ring sparkling in his trembling hand. A look of sudden realization crossed her face, and she turned to her coworker with an innocent, puzzled expression.

"Wait, Taylor," Rachel whispered. "Isn't that the exact same vintage ring your boyfriend, Mark, gave you last week? You said he found it at an estate sale."

Hearing that name sent a jolt of ice-cold adrenaline straight through James’s veins. Mark was his younger brother. Mark had volunteered to watch James's house during the funeral, and had mysteriously stopped answering his calls shortly after. The pieces of a horrific puzzle instantly fell into place. His own brother had stolen his late wife's most precious memory to gift it to a fast-food cashier.

Taylor panicked. Seeing the raw fury in James's eyes, she pulled out her phone with shaking hands and dialed a number. "Mark, he found it!" she screamed into the phone. "James is here at the restaurant! He has the ring!"

Before James could stop her, Taylor bolted through the kitchen doors and ran out the back exit into the night. James didn't chase her. Instead, he immediately called the police. Within minutes, flashing blue and red lights illuminated the parking lot. James explained the entire story to the officers, presenting the ring and the spare safe key he had spotted around Taylor's neck before she fled.

Armed with Mark's address, the police escorted James to his brother's apartment on the edge of town. James's heart pounded against his ribs. The grief of losing Sarah was bad enough, but the sting of a brother's ultimate betrayal was a completely different kind of pain.
