The Uninvited Guest

The autumn evening air at the Vance estate was crisp, filled with the polite chatter of the city’s elite. Thomas Vance stood at the center of the manicured lawn, raising a glass of champagne to his latest business triumph. Everything about him screamed success, from his bespoke black suit to his immaculate posture. But the perfect harmony of the high-society fundraiser was suddenly shattered by a discordant, hollow melody. A street musician had bypassed security, standing near the grand buffet table with a cheap wooden flute.

Thomas’s face hardened. He despised anything that disrupted his carefully curated image. Stepping away from his wealthy associates, he marched toward the intruder. The boy was no older than eighteen, dressed in a faded, dusty t-shirt and worn-out sneakers. He looked painfully out of place among the glittering diamonds and silk gowns.

"Hey! Get him out of here!" Thomas shouted, his voice cutting through the ambient music.

The young man flinched but did not run. Tears welled in his bright green eyes as he gripped the wooden flute tightly. "Please, I need money," the boy pleaded, his voice trembling with a desperation that made several guests turn their heads in discomfort. "My mom is sick. I just need enough for her medicine."

Thomas sneered coldly, utterly unmoved by the dramatic plea. To him, the world was divided into those who worked and those who begged.

"Then earn it. Play,"
he commanded, expecting the boy to crumble under the pressure and leave.

Instead, the boy lowered the flute. With a trembling hand, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a creased, yellowed photograph. He pressed it into Thomas’s palm. Thomas glanced down, expecting a cheap gimmick, but as his eyes focused on the faded image of a young couple holding a newborn baby, his breath caught. The man in the photo was him, nearly two decades younger, alongside Sarah—the love he had abandoned for wealth. Looking up in absolute shock, Thomas whispered,

"Where did you get this?"

The boy wiped a tear from his cheek, his voice barely a whisper.

"My mother said you'd know your son."
