The Firing Line

The heat rising from the Arizona desert was suffocating, distorting the horizon into a shimmering haze. Under the weathered wooden awning of the outdoor shooting range, the air smelled heavily of dry dust, hot metal, and burnt gunpowder. Sarah Vance stood by the rugged wooden bench, her olive green hoodie pulled slightly forward, masking the intense focus in her eyes. Around her, several male recruits whispered and smirked, assuming she was out of her depth.

Dave, the lead tactical instructor, stepped forward. Clad in olive drab tactical gear, a faded baseball cap, and dark sunglasses, he carried an air of absolute authority. He tapped a heavy, custom bolt-action rifle resting in its open case.

"Seven shots," Dave announced, his voice dry and demanding. "Show us you belong on this firing line."

Sarah didn't hesitate. She reached down and lifted the rifle. It was heavy, beautifully balanced, but notoriously difficult to master. Dave watched her closely, crossing his arms.

"Careful," he warned, a hint of a challenge in his tone. "That rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it."

Without a word, Sarah raised the rifle to her shoulder. She breathed in the hot desert air, holding it as she aligned the iron sights with a spinning metal target hundreds of yards downrange. The world around her faded into background noise. She squeezed the trigger.

The deafening crack of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls, the recoil pushing hard against her shoulder. Downrange, the metal target spun violently. Dave blinked, stunned by her speed and precision. He turned to his assistant, his voice dropping.

"Did she hit both?" he muttered.

Sarah didn't wait for their approval. With fluid, practiced ease, she cycled the bolt, the empty brass casing clinking onto the dirt.

"You gave me seven shots," she said calmly.
Before Dave could respond, she fired again, and again, sending a rapid succession of lead downrange with terrifying, flawless precision.
