I Didn't Expect to Find My Fiancée Cornering My Grandmother With a Hidden Voice Recorder Pen

The tulips were supposed to be a surprise. I had picked them up on the way home, bright red and wrapped in crisp kraft paper, thinking Clara would love them—she always said red tulips reminded her of my grandfather. But the moment I stepped through the steel-framed glass entrance of our townhouse, the flowers fell from my fingers.

Diana was standing over Clara in the middle of the foyer, her hand raised like a weapon. My grandmother was on one knee beside her mahogany cane, her champagne-cream satin blouse catching the harsh daylight, her short white hair trembling as she looked up at my fiancée.

"Put your thumbprint on the hidden voice recorder pen right now, Clara, before I lose my patience!" Diana hissed, her voice like venom.

I froze in the doorway. My mind couldn't process what I was seeing. Diana—my Diana, the woman I'd asked to marry me three months ago—was threatening my grandmother over a pen?

The bright red tulips scattered across the polished concrete floor in slow motion, their petals brushing against the cedar slat walls as if even they were trying to escape. Clara's mouth was firmly closed, her eyes wide with fear, but she didn't make a sound.

"I said now, Clara!" Diana's voice rose, her hand inching closer to my grandmother's face.

Something inside me snapped. I was sprinting before I even thought about it, dodging the fallen items on the floor, my heart pounding in my ears. I caught Diana's wrist in mid-air, my grip iron-tight, and stepped squarely between her and Clara.

"Get away from Clara right now!" I roared, my voice echoing off the concrete. "Never raise your hand in this house again!"

Diana stumbled back a step, her eyes wide with startled shock. I felt Clara's trembling hand touch my sleeve, and I turned to see tears glistening on her lower eyelids.

"She thought you wouldn't be back until tonight, Richard," Clara whispered, her voice fragile and quivering. She pointed a shaking finger toward the silver lapel pen lying on the floor near the wall. "Look closely at the hidden voice recorder pen."

My jaw clenched as realization dawned. I picked up the pen, turning it over in my hands. It was heavier than it looked, and there was a tiny button on the side. I pressed it.

Diana's voice crackled through the tiny speaker, but it wasn't the voice I knew. It was cold, calculating, greedy. "By Friday, the house deed will be in my name, and Richard will never know what hit him. The old woman is just a stepping stone."

I looked up at Diana, my eyes burning. Her arrogant smirk had vanished, replaced by a pale, ashen panic.

"So this was your plan all along, Diana?" I asked, my voice icy. "The hidden voice recorder pen shows the exact truth of what you did."

She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. I rose to my full height, pointing a commanding arm toward the open entrance doors.

"You lost everything the second you threatened Clara—get out of our lives for good, Diana!"

She retreated toward the doorway in ruined disgrace, her beige heels clicking against the concrete. But as she reached the threshold, she turned back with a look that made my blood run cold.

"You think you know everything, Richard?" she spat. "There's something you don't know about your precious grandmother."

Clara's eyes went wide, and her grip on my sleeve tightened. I watched Diana disappear into the evening light, her words hanging in the air like a curse.
