Previously: When a wealthy socialite publicly tears open Clara's dress to humiliate her over her deep scars, she expects total ruin. Instead, a decorated Admiral enters the ballroom with a shocking revelation.

The Ghost of the Past

The silence in the ballroom was suffocating. Victoria’s mocking smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer confusion. She looked from the decorated Admiral to the tearful catering assistant, unable to comprehend what was happening. Lawrence, however, looked as though he had seen a ghost. His face was entirely drained of color, his hands shaking so violently he had to pocket them to hide it.

Admiral Vance lowered his salute and immediately unclasped his heavy dress coat, gently draping it over Clara’s trembling shoulders. The warm wool covered her torn blouse and the heavy scars that had just been the subject of ridicule. Clara looked up at her former commander, her voice barely a whisper.

"Admiral... I thought everyone believed I was gone," Clara murmured.

The Admiral shook his head, his eyes filled with fierce determination. "We never stopped looking for you, Captain. And we certainly never forgot your sacrifice." He turned his gaze slowly toward Lawrence, his expression hardening into ice. "And some people here hoped you would never return to tell the truth."

Five years ago, Captain Clara Sterling had led a highly classified rescue mission that was sabotaged from the inside. Her team was ambushed, and Clara had survived near-fatal injuries, leaving her with the physical scars she carried today. The military contractor who had leaked their coordinates to cover up a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scheme was none other than Lawrence himself. He had built his current high-society empire on the blood of Clara’s unit, believing the only witness was dead.

Lawrence tried to step backward toward the exit, but two armed military police officers stepped through the ballroom doors, blocking his escape. The wealthy guests watched in absolute shock as the illusion of Lawrence's prestige began to shatter in real-time.
