The grand ballroom of the Sterling estate was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne flutes, and hushed whispers. Clara stood near the edge of the gilded room, her golden blonde hair pinned up in a neat French twist. She wore a simple white silk blouse, a stark contrast to the extravagant gowns surrounding her. She had returned to New York not for the wealth, but to confront the ghosts of her past.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her. It was Victoria, a wealthy socialite draped in a navy blue silk gown, her eyes flashing with malice. Victoria had spent the evening whispering rumors about Clara, desperate to maintain her own standing alongside Clara’s uncle, Charles.

"You don't belong in a place like this, Clara," Victoria sneered, her voice carrying across the immediate circle. "You're nothing but a charity case."

Before Clara could step back, Victoria lunged forward. With a cruel, swift motion, she ripped open the back of Clara’s white blouse. The silk tore with a sharp screech, exposing Clara’s bare back.

The crowd gasped. Etched into Clara's skin were large, deeply stitched cross-shaped scars—the undeniable marks of a horrific trauma.

"Look at her!" Victoria laughed mockingly, pointing at Clara's back. "She's nothing but scars! A complete freak!"

Whispers rippled through the elite crowd like wildfire. Humiliated, Clara felt tears of raw emotion welling in her eyes. Charles, an older gentleman in a double-breasted tuxedo, stepped forward. Instead of offering comfort, his eyes flared with panic. He needed Clara gone before anyone asked questions.

"Security, get her out of here!" Charles commanded, pointing at Clara.

But before the guards could move, the massive grand doors of the ballroom swung wide open. The heavy, rhythmic stride of military boots silenced the room. Admiral Vance, a highly decorated military officer, marched through the parting crowd. He stopped directly in front of Clara. Raising his hand to his brow, he saluted her with profound respect.

"Captain Sterling, welcome home," the Admiral said.

Charles's face turned completely pale, frozen in absolute terror, while Clara let out a shaky breath, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.
