The Whispering Peaks had always been a place of ancient, heavy silence, but today the narrow mountain pass hummed with a tense, dangerous energy. High above the valley, where the clouds hung like bruised silk, a fractured monolith stood as a monument to a forgotten age. Embedded deep within the cracked stone was the Sovereign Blade, a legendary sword whose hilt was wrapped in weathered leather. For generations, kings and warlords had come to this altar of stone, attempting to claim the weapon that would grant them the divine right to rule. None had ever succeeded.

Today, it was Borin’s turn. The massive, red-bearded mercenary captain stood before the stone, his dark steel breastplate catching the dull, diffuse twilight. His companions watched in silence as he gripped the cord-wrapped hilt with his massive, scarred hands. Borin grunted, his boots slipping on the loose gravel as he threw his entire weight into the effort. The veins in his thick neck bulged like tree roots, and his face turned a deep, furious crimson. He strained against the ancient magic of the monolith, but the blade remained utterly motionless, fused to the stone as if it were a single piece of rock.

With a final, frustrated roar, Borin let go of the hilt and stumbled back. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and turned to his men, grumbling with bitter pride, "If I couldn't pull it out, no one can."

Standing nearby was Arthur, a slight, soot-faced young man wearing a rough-spun shirt. As the apprentice to the local blacksmith, he had been forced to carry the heavy gear of the mercenaries up the steep trail. He had spent his entire life in the shadows, his hands blistered from the forge, his voice ignored. But as he looked at the sword, a strange, warm resonance vibrated in his chest. Ignoring the sneers of the giant fighters, Arthur stepped forward. He looked up at the weathered pommel, feeling a sudden, quiet resolve wash over him.

"I am Arthur. And I am going to claim you."

He reached out, his weathered hand closing firmly around the cord-wrapped hilt.
