Previously: When nine-year-old Emily sneaks into a luxury gala begging to play the piano for food, the host scoffs. But the melody she plays reveals a heartbreaking truth about his past.

The Ghost of the Past

The girl stared back at Edward, unaffected by the wealthy crowd holding their breath around them.

"Her name is Clara," she said softly. "And my name is Emily."

The name hit Edward like a physical blow. Clara. His younger sister, whom he had allowed their tyrannical father to cast out fifteen years ago. Clara had refused an arranged marriage, choosing instead to follow her heart. Edward, greedy for the family fortune, had stood by and done nothing as she was banished into poverty. He had spent the last decade pretending she didn't exist, burying his guilt beneath mountains of gold.

Now, her daughter was standing in his home, begging for a meal.

"Where is she, Emily?" Edward asked, his voice shaking violently as he grabbed the edge of the piano.

"She's very sick," Emily whispered, a tear escaping down her cheek. "She told me if I ever got hungry, to come to the house with the golden gates and play her song. She said you would remember."

Before Edward could process the overwhelming wave of guilt, his wife, Eleanor, stepped forward. Her face was twisted in disgust.

"Edward, what is this nonsense?" she hissed, grabbing his arm. "Get this dirty child out of here before the press sees! You're making a scene!"

Several of Edward's business partners muttered in agreement, urging him to call security. They cared only about the reputation of the Vance name. But looking at Emily's innocent, tear-stained face, Edward saw the sister he had betrayed.

He looked at Eleanor, then at the crowd of superficial friends. For the first time in his life, his wealth felt like a heavy, suffocating cage.

"She is my niece," Edward announced, his voice echoing clearly through the grand hall.

A collective gasp filled the room. Eleanor's eyes went wide with fury.

"If you don't throw her out, I will leave!" she threatened.

Edward looked at the woman he had married for status, then down at Emily. He reached out and gently took his niece's hand.

"Then start packing," Edward said quietly.
