The Ultimatum

The silence in the kitchen was deafening after Sophie’s confession. Liam stared at his mother, his jaw tight with fury. Eleanor’s composed expression finally cracked, a flicker of panic crossing her face before she quickly masked it with cold arrogance.

"She is exaggerating, Liam,"

Eleanor sneered, smoothing down her green gown.

"She has always been dramatic. I merely suggested she help around the house. After all, she brings nothing else to this family."

Liam pulled out his phone, his thumb tapping the screen rapidly. He turned the screen toward his mother. It showed a live feed of the kitchen from a hidden nanny cam he had installed weeks prior, concerned by Sophie's growing anxiety. The recorded audio played clearly, capturing Eleanor's vicious insults and her threat to keep Sophie away from her daughter.

Eleanor’s face turned pale, but instead of backing down, her eyes hardened. She walked over to the marble island and picked up a manila folder she had left there.

"If you choose her over me, Liam, you are finished,"

Eleanor threatened, her voice sharp as glass.

"I built this empire. If you do not divorce this girl and leave my granddaughter here to be raised properly, I will cut you off. You will be stripped of your position at the firm, your inheritance, and you will be evicted from this house tonight."

She tossed the disinheritance papers onto the counter. Sophie felt her breath catch in her throat. She looked at Liam, terrified that he would choose his family's vast fortune over their life together. Everything he had worked for was on the line.

But Liam didn't hesitate. He looked at the papers, then slowly reached into the inner pocket of his charcoal blazer. He pulled out a folded document of his own and laid it flat on the marble countertop.

"You think you control this family, Mother,"

Liam said, his voice deadly calm.

"But you forgot one very important detail about Father's will."
