A Night of Shifting Masks

The grand ballroom of the Whispering Pines Estate was a spectacle of opulence. Above us, a massive crystal chandelier cast a warm, golden glow over hundreds of wedding guests dressed in their finest attire. I stood near the center of the room, smoothing down the front of my champagne satin dress. At seven months pregnant, I should have been radiant with joy. Instead, my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My husband, Justin, stood beside me, looking devastatingly handsome in his dark blue tuxedo. But as he handed me a glass of sparkling cider, I saw the tight, unnatural smile on his lips.

For weeks, I had suspected the worst. The sudden dizzy spells, the bitter aftertaste in my morning tea, and the hidden vial of slow-acting toxin I had discovered in his study. Justin didn't want a family; he wanted the multi-million dollar trust fund that would revert entirely to him if I passed away. I knew that simply accusing him would achieve nothing. He was too clever, too manipulative. I had to catch him in a lie so grand, so public, that he could never wriggle his way out of it.

I raised the glass, pretending to take a deep sip, and then let it slip from my fingers. It shattered on the marble floor. I gasped dramatically, clutching my throat as if a sudden paralysis had gripped me. The music stopped. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the ballroom as guests turned to stare.

I expected Justin to play the worried husband. Instead, the mask slipped entirely. His eyes flared with a sickening, triumphant light. He theatrically grabbed my neck, lifting me slightly as if witnessing my final breath, before letting me collapse to the polished floor. Before anyone could even call for help, Justin flexed his fists, threw his head back, and roared with manic glee:

"She's dead! It's finally over!"

A collective wave of shock and horror rippled through the crowd. My husband was celebrating my death before my body had even grown cold.
