Previously: When Clara collapsed at her sister's wedding, her husband Thomas screamed that she was dead. But waking up in the hospital, Clara discovered a terrifying truth about the man she loved.

When I finally opened my eyes, the opulent ballroom was gone, replaced by the sterile white walls of a hospital room. The rhythmic, reassuring beep of a heart monitor filled the quiet space. I tried to move, but my limbs felt like lead. My first instinct was to touch my stomach. A nurse, noticing my movement, quickly rushed to my side. "Don't try to move just yet, Clara. Your baby is safe and stable," she whispered reassuringly. Relief washed over me, but it was quickly replaced by a cold dread as the memories of the ballroom returned.

A Dark Discovery

A few minutes later, Dr. Aris entered the room, his expression grave. He asked the nurse to leave us. "Clara, we ran an emergency toxicology screen when you were admitted," he said, leaning in close. "We found high traces of a synthetic toxin in your system. It’s a slow-acting poison that targets the heart. Have you ingested anything unusual recently?"

My mind immediately flashed to the chamomile tea Thomas prepared for me every single night, insisting it was good for the baby. He had been poisoning me. I realized with horror that his theatrical display at the wedding was meant to ensure I died in public, making it look like a sudden, tragic medical emergency. He wanted my family's massive inheritance, and with me and the baby gone, it would all legally transfer to him.

"We need to call the police," Dr. Aris said firmly.

"No, not yet," I whispered, tears streaming down my face. "He thinks he succeeded. If he knows I’m awake, he’ll find another way to finish it. We need to catch him." Together, we devised a plan. Dr. Aris agreed to tell Thomas that I was in a vegetative state and unlikely to survive the night. We waited for the trap to spring.
