The Demands in Court

The air inside the courtroom was thick with tension, the bright morning light reflecting off the polished marble accents of the walls. Sarah sat at her defense table, her hands folded neatly on the wood. She wore a beige blazer, her brown hair pulled back into a neat, precise ponytail. On the outside, she looked like the picture of calm, but inside, her heart was beating like a war drum. For seven years, she had built her twelve-million-dollar tech company from a dusty garage into an industry leader. And now, her soon-to-be-ex-husband was trying to tear it all away.

Across the aisle sat John Carter. He looked incredibly smug, adjusting his silk tie as he leaned back in his chair. His tailored navy suit fit him perfectly, and his slicked-back brown hair shone under the courtroom lights. He didn't look like a man going through a difficult divorce; he looked like a king about to claim his crown. He caught Sarah looking at him and smiled, a cold, mocking expression that made her stomach turn.

"Half of your twelve-million-dollar company, and the entirety of the family trust fund," John declared, his voice dripping with arrogance as he looked toward the judge's bench.

John’s attorney nodded in agreement, presenting a thick stack of financial demands. They believed they had found a loophole in the prenuptial agreement, one that would strip Sarah of everything she had worked for, including the trust fund her late grandfather had left her. John believed he had won before the trial had even truly begun.

But Sarah didn't flinch. She slowly stood up from her desk, the movement smooth and deliberate. The whispers in the gallery died down as she walked toward the front of the court. In her hand, she held a simple, sealed manila envelope. She bypassed her own lawyer, walking directly to the bench where Judge Margaret sat in her black robes.

With a steady hand, Sarah passed the envelope to the judge. Judge Margaret, a serious woman known for her strict adherence to the law, looked at the envelope, then at Sarah. Slowly, she unsealed the paper. As her eyes scanned the contents, her stern expression softened, replaced by a knowing smile. She looked up and locked eyes with the smug husband.

"Mr. Carter, I think you should see this," Judge Margaret said.
