Previously: When Kevin took a bite of his lunch at a local diner, he expected a normal meal. Instead, he bit into a hidden secret that shattered his marriage instantly.

A Smirk and a Secret

The tension at the counter was thick enough to cut with a knife. Courtney took a step back, her hand hovering near the register, while Brittany looked desperately toward the kitchen. Kevin didn't care about the scene he was making. He slammed his hand onto the counter, demanding to see the person responsible for the kitchen.

"Who made this?" Kevin demanded, his voice low and dangerous. "Who was on the grill?"

Courtney swallowed hard, pointing a trembling finger toward the back office. "Our manager, Marcus. He... he personally prepared the special orders today."

The name hit Kevin like a physical blow. Marcus was the personal trainer Sarah had been spending hours with at the gym. The puzzle pieces instantly locked together in his mind. The late-night texts, the secretive smiles, the "lost" ring. It wasn't lost at all. It had been left behind, and Marcus had decided to use it to mock him.

A moment later, Marcus emerged from the back. He was a tall, muscular man in his late twenties, sporting a smug expression that made Kevin's fists clench. He wiped his hands on a black apron and leaned against the counter, looking down at the greasy burger and the sparkling ring sitting beside it.

"Is there a problem with your order, sir?" Marcus asked, his voice dripping with mock politeness.

Kevin picked up the ring, holding it inches from Marcus's face. "Explain why my wife's wedding ring was inside my lunch."

Marcus leaned in closer, his smirk widening. In a whisper meant only for Kevin, he sneered, "Let's just say she left it on my nightstand last night. I thought I'd return it to you in a way you'd never forget. What are you going to do about it?"

Kevin’s blood boiled, but he refused to give Marcus the satisfaction of a physical fight. Instead, he pulled out his phone. He didn't call his wife, and he didn't call the police. He dialed a direct number he had saved in his contacts—a number that would change everything.
