The grand reception hall of the Sterling mansion was usually a place of cold, quiet elegance, but tonight it felt like a gilded cage. Standing near the sweeping cherry wood staircase, Sarah clutched her pregnant belly, her heart hammering against her ribs. Only moments before, her mother-in-law, Victoria, had cornered her. Victoria’s words had been laced with a venom so pure it left Sarah breathless. When Sarah had tried to walk away, Victoria had lunged, her manicured nails digging into Sarah's skin, leaving a stinging red scratch across her cheek.

A Husband's Betrayal

Before Sarah could even process the assault, the heavy front doors opened, and her husband, Thomas, stepped inside. Taking one look at the scene, he immediately assumed the worst of his wife. He marched across the marble floor, his face twisted in blind anger.

"How dare you speak to my mother like that in my house?" Thomas shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Sarah burst into hysterical tears, the physical pain of the scratch matching the agony of his betrayal.

"Your mother humiliated me," Sarah whimpered, her voice trembling. "And you heard every word."

Instead of comforting his pregnant wife, Thomas stood cold and silent. From the steps above, Victoria sneered down at them.

"Know your place. You never belonged to this family," the older woman spat.

But the tense silence was shattered when the massive front doors swung open once more. This time, it wasn't a guest. It was Arthur, Sarah’s imposing father, flanked by four burly security guards. Arthur’s eyes locked onto the scratch on his daughter's face, and a dangerous, icy calm washed over him. He walked past a stunned Thomas and stood before Sarah.

"My daughter, pack your things," Arthur said, his voice flat and commanding.

Thomas tried to protest, but Arthur turned a glare on him that could freeze water.

"And you will answer for every tear," Arthur warned.
